What is a Legacy Portrait?

Your Family History in Pictures

My mother and grandmother. The only professional portrait of them together.

What is a legacy portrait? It is a portrait documenting your family through the photograph. Hopefully, photographs you having hanging on your wall and they did not fall into the box of the family archive.  I remember as a child flipping through my parent’s wedding album so many times the album finally crumbled. There were many beautiful portraits captured in that album that left an indelible imprint in my memory. Especially, the beautiful portrait of my mom in a frame where my grandmother had it in her room and now I have it in mine. That wedding photo was captured fifty-plus years ago in a photographer’s studio. It was the last professional photo of my mom besides her high school portrait. Of course, until I came along in my profession as a photographer.

The Family Archive

This past year I sat down with my father reviewing the family archive during a video session.  I learned so much about my family history during that interview. I am glad I was able to have those old family photos so I could cue his memory about family history.

My great-great grandparents Tony and Mary Paolucci in Italy.

In those archives, we have one picture of my great-great grandparents who lived in Italy. We have one family photo of my great grandparents who were the first to arrive in the United States. The photo includes my grandfather as a baby. My father was able to name each person and their stories in that photo.

Where to begin with your legacy?

The cigar symbolizes the patriarch of the Italian family. My grandfather is the baby in the picture.

A professional intimate portrait in your home or a setting you love is a great place to start with sharing your legacy. My experience as a photojournalist allows me to capture your legacy in the most authentic way. These sessions are an opportunity to share your legacy with your children and grandchildren. It is a gift that will last for a lifetime. What do you think?
