Tips for Dressing For a Family Portrait

Here are a few key tips that I recommend as a photographer for dressing your family for a portrait. However, you know your family best, but consider the following to get started.

Search Pinterest

Pinterest is a great place to start for inspiration. Search ‘family photos’ because nothing is better than to look at examples than for me to try to explain good examples.  Here is my page to get started. Click here

Choosing a Color Scheme or Style

  • Keep it Simple. Choose a general color palette for everyone. The last thing you want is one person showing up in a bright green shirt and everyone else wearing blue.

  • Less is More. Minimize bright and solid colors. You do want the family to look like a unit, but not a basketball team.

  • Dark versus light. Dark clothing slenderizes, light clothing looks fresh.

  • Pants: Everyone wearing pants should be similar in style and color. Jeans are a flexible option to wear outside and they go with any top.

  • What is the season? Observe the colors and hues of the season that compliment the surroundings.

Bring Options to Portrait Session

  • Additional shirts or outfits. We can mix things up as time permits or in case of emergency situations.
  • Dress in layers: vests, light jackets, scarfs, and wraps.
  • Minimize jewelry
  • Bring Blankets, Props & Pets
  • Fashion Hats for Individual Sessions

Things to Avoid for a Family Portrait

  • Do not dress like a sports team or wedding party, dial it back a bit.
  • Do not wear shirts with large branded names on it.
  • Do not wear shorts or baseball caps.
  • Do not wear transition lenses or sunglasses.
  • Do not come with wet hair.
